Netherlands present new king:Thousands of Dutch turn out to see monarch Beatrix abdicate
Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands abdicated today, handing over to the crown to her eldest son, Willem-Alexander, who at 46, became the first King of the Netherlands in over 120 years.

He gripped his mother's hand after they both signed the official documents at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. The 75-year-old looked close to tears as she appeared afterwards on a balcony overlooking 20,000 of her former subjects.

'I am happy and grateful to introduce to you your new king, Willem-Alexander,' she told the crowd, many of whom were dressed head to toe in the colour orange.
